Plastics exhaust pipe offers incredible benefits

A German supplier has recently developed an exhaust system that uses plastics to increase engine performance and make the car more efficient.

They created the plastics and metal hybrid for a six cylinder diesel engine, suggesting that it will soon be available on a German car.

The use of lightweight plastics in the exhaust system offers a number of important benefits. The most important advantage is the reduction of exhaust counter pressure: letting gases flow with less resistance and allowing the engine to "breatheā€ more easily. This allows car manufacturers to optimise engine management and cut fuel consumption, thereby reducing C02 emissions. The manufacturer claims to reach a reduction of exhaust back pressure of more than 50 % and a weight reduction over 50 % (compared to a serial muffle). Initial tests on several vehicles using the new exhaust system have supported these claims.

The new system consists of a metal inner-pipe for channelling exhaust gases and a plastic exhaust pipe wall. Exhaust systems have always been made of metal and the use of plastics offers a number of related benefits including reduced weight, reduced installation space and the integration of under-body covers, which provide further potential for vehicle value retention and vehicle longevity.
