Single-use cups win every time!

Do you prefer your coffee from a plastic cup or from your own porcelain mug? Which do you think is better for the environment?

These and similar questions have been cropping up so often over the last decade that the Benelux Disposables Foundation commissioned the Dutch institute TNO (the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research) to search for answers! In its study, TNO compared many different drinks systems and the environmental impact they had, based on 1,000 servings of a hot drink from a vending machine in an office environment. Every process was included, from the production of the drinks systems, transport, collection, waste processing and recycling stages, and even the treatment of waste water in a drainage purification system. The final verdict showed that single-use cups, especially the polystyrene and polyethylene laminated cardboard ones, made the least environmental impact while being more convenient and hygienic to use!
